Moving into a new home is one of life's great thresholds. In Hindu tradition, it is not merely a practical event — it is a ceremony of intention, of blessing space, of inviting the divine into the place where your family will live and grow. Griha Pravesh is the ritual that makes that crossing sacred. This guide shows you how to do it properly, wherever you are in the world.
What Is Griha Pravesh?
Griha Pravesh (Sanskrit: गृहप्रवेश — literally "entering the home") is the Hindu housewarming ceremony performed when a family first enters a new home. It is rooted in Vastu Shastra — the ancient science of harmonious space — and is performed to:
- Purify and consecrate the new space
- Remove any residual negative energies (Vastu Dosh)
- Invoke the blessings of Vastu Purusha, the deity of the home
- Seek Ganesha's blessing to remove obstacles in the new home
- Welcome Lakshmi (prosperity) into the household
Three Types of Griha Pravesh
| Type | Sanskrit | When Used |
|---|---|---|
| Apoorva | अपूर्व | First entry into a brand new home (most common) |
| Sapoorva | सपूर्व | Re-entering an existing home after renovation, long absence, or illness |
| Dwandwah | द्वंद्व | Entering a home where a death occurred — more elaborate purification |
This guide covers Apoorva Griha Pravesh — the most common form. If you're performing Sapoorva or Dwandwah, consult a pandit for the additional rituals.
When to Perform Griha Pravesh — Auspicious Muhurta
Timing is considered crucial in Griha Pravesh. The following are traditional guidelines — consult a panchang or Jyotishi for your specific date:
- Best months: Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, Jyeshtha (January–June, Uttarayana period)
- Best days of the week: Wednesday (Budh), Thursday (Brihaspati), Friday (Shukra)
- Moon phase: Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) — days 2 through 14
- Avoid: Rahu Kaal (1.5 hours of daily inauspicious time), Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi, Amavasya
- Best Nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashirsha, Pushya, Hasta, Shravana, or Uttara Nakshtras
- Time of day: Morning (between sunrise and noon) is generally preferred
Moving dates in the West are rarely panchang-friendly — you move when the lease starts. A practical approach: perform the main housewarming celebration (party, invitations) on your actual move-in date, but perform the Griha Pravesh puja on the next available auspicious muhurta within 1–2 weeks. The puja itself is not time-sensitive to the minute of possession.

Step-by-Step Griha Pravesh Vidhi
This is the standard Apoorva Griha Pravesh procedure. Allow 60–90 minutes for the full ritual. A pandit will typically take 2–3 hours with all extended mantras.
-
Purify the entire homeBefore the family or guests arrive, clean every room thoroughly. Mix a pinch of turmeric and salt in a bucket of water. Mop every floor with this mixture — it is the first act of purification. Sprinkle a few drops in each corner. Leave all windows and doors open for ventilation.
-
Decorate the entranceHang a toran (doorway garland) of mango leaves above the main entrance — this is essential. Draw or apply a Swastika on both sides of the door frame in roli or turmeric. Create a rangoli (or place one) at the threshold. The threshold is the passage through which Lakshmi enters — it must be honoured.
-
Set up the puja areaChoose the northeast corner (Ishanya koona) of the main room for the havan. Place a fresh cloth on the floor. Set up the havan kund, kalash, idols, and all samagri. The idols face east or north. Light a preliminary diya before anything else begins.
-
Sankalpa — Statement of IntentThe family head holds water, flowers, and roli in their joined palms and recites the Sankalpa — a formal statement of purpose. The pandit (or the QR guide) will provide the precise wording. In essence, you state your name, your lineage, the date, the place, and the intention of the ritual.
-
Ganesh PujaBegin with Ganesh Puja as you would in all Hindu rituals. Offer flowers, roli, and chawal to Ganesha. Chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha" 11 or 21 times. Ring the bell. Ask for the removal of all obstacles in the new home.
-
Navgraha Puja (optional but recommended)Invoke all nine planetary deities, offering each their specific grain or item. This step harmonises the home with cosmic forces. The full Navgraha Puja is included in the QR guide that comes with the Chaitanya kit.
-
Vastu PujaWalk through the home clockwise, holding a lit diya. In each room, perform a mini-puja: sprinkle roli and chawal in each corner, chant the Vastu Purusha Mantra ("Om Vastu Purushaya Namaha"), and ring a bell. This dedicates each room to its protective deity according to Vastu Shastra.
-
Havan (fire ritual)Light the havan fire with camphor placed on the samidha wood. Once burning, offer ghee (ahuti) with a flat wooden spoon (sruk) into the fire while chanting each mantra. The traditional mantras are: Gayatri Mantra, Purusha Sukta, and Vastu Purusha Mantra. Offer minimum 108 ahuties of ghee. Add havan samagri with "Swaha" after each mantra.
-
Lakshmi PujaAfter the havan, perform a formal Lakshmi Puja at the main altar. Offer flowers, incense, camphor aarti, and sweet prasad. Chant the Shri Sukta or Lakshmi Stotram. This invites the goddess of abundance to reside permanently in your new home.
-
The First Entry Threshold RitualThe most visually powerful moment. Place a small pot of raw rice at the inner threshold. The eldest woman of the household stands outside, left foot forward. She then steps in with her right foot and gently kicks the rice pot inward — symbolising abundance flowing into the home. The family follows in order of age.
-
First cooking — Milk Overflow (Paal Kaathal)In the kitchen, place a vessel of milk on the stove. Allow it to boil and overflow intentionally — this is the Tamil/South Indian tradition of Paal Kaathal and is practised across many traditions. The overflow symbolises prosperity overflowing from the home. Serve the boiled milk as the first prasad.
If you live in an apartment where open fire is restricted, use a small portable havan kund on your balcony. Keep water nearby. Ensure smoke can exit through open windows or a balcony door. Alternatively, perform a symbolic havan with camphor and incense in a well-ventilated space — the intention is what matters most.
