Vat Savitri Vrat Kit

The married woman who argued with the God of Death and won — and a vrat where the cotton thread IS the ritual. Vat Savitri (Vat Purnima in Maharashtra) is the married women’s vrat where the devotee circumambulates a banyan tree (vat), wrapping raw cotton thread (kaccha sut) around the trunk seven times. It commemorates Savitri’s legendary debate with Yama to reclaim her husband Satyavan’s life. Eleven items built around the tree circumambulation: the raw cotton thread (kaccha sut) is the centrepiece — it must be unspun, unbleached raw cotton. The miniature hand fan (pankha) is the traditional offering left at the tree. Kala chana (black gram) is the prescribed offering. The Katha book narrates Savitri’s story. Vat Savitri falls in Jyeshtha month (May–June). In diaspora settings where banyan trees are unavailable, families perform the puja at home with a symbolic vat branch or image — the kit contents work in both settings.
