Godh Bharai (also called Seemantonayana or Valaikappu) is the Hindu baby shower performed in the 7th or 9th month of pregnancy. The centrepiece is the lap-filling ceremony: dry coconut, dry fruits, and akshat are placed in the mother’s lap, symbolising abundance and safe delivery. The ritual is performed across North, South, and West India with regional variations. Eleven items focused on the mother’s blessing: the dry coconut (gola) is the lap-filling essential. Premium dry fruits and mishri represent sweetness and abundance. Red/green chunri (varies by region) adorns the mother. The brass aarti diya and rose dhoop create the ritual atmosphere.
