About This Product
The first-haircut ceremony is a family occasion with a priest, relatives and photographs, and families want the samagri to look the part. Mundan is also the ceremony diaspora families most often struggle to prepare for, because it usually happens away from the home temple and away from the grandparents who know the list. A complete kit solves both problems in one purchase.
Ten items cover the ceremony. Chandan paste is applied to the child's head after the shave to cool the scalp, and haldi is used for the same purpose. Ganga Jal purifies the child and the site before the first cut. Moli and janeu are tied during the rite, and akshat, kumkum, kale til and a brass diya complete the accompanying puja. Everything ships in Chaitanya's reusable heirloom metal box.
Mundan, or Chudakarana, is the eighth of the sixteen samskaras. It is traditionally performed in the child's first or third year. Many families take the child to a temple for the tonsure. Tirumala, the temple of Sri Venkateswara (Balaji), is the best known, which is why the kit carries Balaji artwork. Where the child's hair is offered at a temple, the kit serves the home puja that goes with the visit.
Like Namakaran, demand follows births rather than the festival calendar, so orders arrive steadily through the year. Priests who perform the ceremony for diaspora families are a natural resale channel.
