The Mukhis — One-Mukhi to Twenty-One-Mukhi

A rudraksha's mukhi count changes everything about it — the deity it represents, the planet it corresponds to, the mantra it carries, the rarity it commands, the price it costs. This chapter is the complete reference.

Key rudraksha mukhis: 1-mukhi (Shiva, extremely rare, moksha), 2-mukhi (unity, relationships), 3-mukhi (Agni, burns karma), 4-mukhi (Brahma, knowledge), 5-mukhi (most common, general well-being), 6-mukhi (Kartikeya, focus), 7-mukhi (Lakshmi, prosperity), 8-mukhi (Ganesha, obstacle removal), 9-mukhi (Durga, protection), 14-mukhi (Shiva's third eye).

Every rudraksha bead has a specific number of vertical grooves running from its top pole to its bottom pole. These are the mukhis (मुखी, faces). The count of mukhis on a single bead determines almost everything the tradition says about it — which deity it represents, which planet it corresponds to, which mantra to recite on it, how rare it is, and what it costs.

A five-mukhi rudraksha is the everyday devotional bead — common, affordable, appropriate for household practice. A one-mukhi rudraksha is one of the rarest natural objects in the Indian tradition, commanding prices in lakhs for genuine specimens. A fourteen-mukhi is rare but reachable. A twenty-one-mukhi is essentially museum-grade.

This chapter is the reference table for all of it. Mukhi by mukhi, from one to twenty-one, with the deity, the planet, the mantra, the traditional wearing purpose, the rarity, and the honest price band.

What each mukhi represents

The classical texts (Rudraksha Jabala Upanishad, Shiva Purana, Padma Purana) each name deities and mantras for the mukhis. There is some variation across texts, but the mainstream tradition is stable enough for reference purposes. Below is that reference — traditional attributions, not personal astrological prescriptions.

One-mukhi · Ek-mukhi

Deity: Shiva (the primal, undivided form)
Planet: Sun (Surya)
Mantra: Om Hreem Namah
Traditional purpose: The rarest rudraksha. Associated with total concentration, meditative absorption, spiritual dissolution of the ego. Historically worn only by the most serious yogis and renunciates.
Rarity: Extremely rare. Most beads sold as "one-mukhi" in the market are half-moon shaped fakes or heavily-modified beads. Genuine round one-mukhi is virtually unavailable except through museum-grade specialised suppliers.
Honest price band for genuine specimen: ₹2,50,000 - ₹15,00,000+ (Nepal-authenticated with X-ray)

Two-mukhi · Do-mukhi

Deity: Ardhanarishvara (Shiva-Shakti union)
Planet: Moon (Chandra)
Mantra: Om Namah
Traditional purpose: Harmony in marriage; unity of dual principles. Worn by married couples together (matching beads) for classical marriage-harmony practice.
Rarity: Uncommon but available. Nepal-sourced genuine two-mukhi commands a substantial premium.
Honest price band: ₹15,000 - ₹1,00,000

Three-mukhi · Teen-mukhi

Deity: Agni (the fire god); also associated with the three-fold Brahma-Vishnu-Mahesh
Planet: Mars (Mangal)
Mantra: Om Kleem Namah
Traditional purpose: Freedom from past-karmic residue; classical fire-purification practice.
Rarity: Moderately available.
Honest price band: ₹3,000 - ₹15,000

Four-mukhi · Chatur-mukhi

Deity: Brahma (the four-headed creator)
Planet: Mercury (Budh)
Mantra: Om Hreem Namah
Traditional purpose: Creative-intellectual clarity; the classical scholar's rudraksha.
Rarity: Available.
Honest price band: ₹2,000 - ₹8,000

Five-mukhi · Panch-mukhi — the workhorse

Deity: Rudra (Shiva in his classical five-faced form; sometimes named the Pancha-Brahma form)
Planet: Jupiter (Guru)
Mantra: Om Hreem Namah
Traditional purpose: General daily-driver rudraksha. Appropriate for any Shaiva practice, any mantra, any household. This is the mala the vast majority of practitioners will and should wear.
Rarity: Very common. The everyday bead.
Honest price band: ₹800 - ₹5,000 for a full 108-bead mala (Nepal beads ~₹2,500-5,000; Indonesian ~₹800-2,500)

Five-mukhi is not a lesser bead. It is the mainstream because it is the tradition's default recommendation. The instinct to reach for rarer mukhis "because rarer must be better" is a retail-market instinct, not a tradition instinct. The classical practitioner counts japa on five-mukhi for decades and is not the poorer for it.

Six-mukhi · Shash-mukhi

Deity: Kartikeya (Shiva's son, warrior-god); also associated with Shakti in some traditions
Planet: Venus (Shukra)
Mantra: Om Hreem Hoom Namah
Traditional purpose: Devotional strength; classical Kartikeya-tradition bead.
Rarity: Available.
Honest price band: ₹3,000 - ₹15,000

Seven-mukhi · Sapt-mukhi

Deity: Mahalakshmi (Lakshmi in her expanded form)
Planet: Saturn (Shani)
Mantra: Om Hoom Namah
Traditional purpose: Prosperity in the classical dharmic sense — right livelihood, ethical wealth. Not a "money magnet".
Rarity: Available.
Honest price band: ₹3,000 - ₹15,000

Eight-mukhi · Asht-mukhi

Deity: Ganesha
Planet: Rahu (the north lunar node)
Mantra: Om Hoom Namah
Traditional purpose: Removal of obstacles in the classical Ganesha sense. Associated with new beginnings.
Rarity: Available.
Honest price band: ₹3,000 - ₹15,000

Nine-mukhi · Nav-mukhi

Deity: Durga (the nine forms of Devi — Navadurga)
Planet: Ketu (the south lunar node)
Mantra: Om Hreem Hoom Namah
Traditional purpose: Shakta tradition primary bead. Classical Navratri-associated.
Rarity: Available; commands a premium among Shakta practitioners.
Honest price band: ₹4,000 - ₹18,000

Ten-mukhi · Dash-mukhi

Deity: Vishnu (in his ten avatars — Dashavatara)
Planet: None specific (understood as neutralising planetary influences)
Mantra: Om Hreem Namah
Traditional purpose: The Vaishnava rudraksha (uncommon — most Vaishnavas prefer tulsi mala). Also traditionally used for household protection.
Rarity: Available; sits at the boundary between common and rare.
Honest price band: ₹5,000 - ₹25,000

Eleven-mukhi · Ekadash-mukhi

Deity: Rudra (in his eleven forms — the Ekadasha Rudra)
Planet: All eleven Rudras (no single planetary correspondence)
Mantra: Om Hreem Hoom Namah
Traditional purpose: Deep Rudra-tradition practice. Rare and powerful in classical assessment.
Rarity: Uncommon.
Honest price band: ₹8,000 - ₹50,000

Twelve-mukhi · Dwadash-mukhi

Deity: Aditya (the twelve solar forms — the Dwadasha Aditya)
Planet: Sun (in twelve manifestations)
Mantra: Om Kroom Namah
Traditional purpose: Classical Surya-tradition. Vitality and radiance in the classical sense.
Rarity: Uncommon.
Honest price band: ₹10,000 - ₹60,000

Thirteen-mukhi · Trayodash-mukhi

Deity: Indra; also associated with Kama-deva
Planet: Venus (higher octave)
Mantra: Om Hreem Namah
Traditional purpose: Charisma, magnetism, leadership in classical terms.
Rarity: Rare.
Honest price band: ₹25,000 - ₹1,50,000

Fourteen-mukhi · Chaturdash-mukhi

Deity: Hanuman (the fourteen-faced Rudra); also Deva-mani
Planet: Saturn (Shani in higher form)
Mantra: Om Namah
Traditional purpose: Deep meditative practice. The classical deva-mani — considered exceptionally auspicious.
Rarity: Very rare.
Honest price band: ₹75,000 - ₹5,00,000

Fifteen through Twenty-one Mukhi

Fifteen-mukhi — Pashupati form of Shiva
Sixteen-mukhi — Sadashiva (Shiva in his fivefold-cubed form)
Seventeen-mukhi — Vishwakarma / Vishwarupa
Eighteen-mukhi — Mother Earth (Bhu Devi)
Nineteen-mukhi — Vishnu-Narayan
Twenty-mukhi — Brahma-Sarasvati
Twenty-one-mukhi — Kubera (lord of wealth); the culminating rare mukhi

These very-high-mukhi beads are essentially museum-grade. Genuine specimens exist but are rarely traded outside the highest levels of the collector market. Prices range from ₹1,00,000 to several crores for authenticated genuine specimens. The Chaitanya house does not sell mukhis fourteen and above — the counterfeit exposure is too high and the tradition-serving practical use case does not require them. A serious practitioner is well-served by five-mukhi (daily), plus one or two specific higher mukhis chosen consciously.

The Ganesha rudraksha

Distinct from the mukhi count is a specific rudraksha variant: the Ganesha rudraksha — a bead of any mukhi count that has a natural raised trunk-like projection on its surface, resembling Ganesha's trunk. These are considered particularly auspicious regardless of mukhi count and command a substantial premium.

The Gaurishankar rudraksha

Two rudraksha beads that have grown fused together as a single bead are called Gaurishankar (Shiva-Shakti in union). These are rare, symbolically representing the Ardhanarishvara, and are considered particularly powerful for marriage-harmony and dual-principle-integration practice.

Practical guidance for choice

For the household reader:

If you are starting rudraksha practice — buy a five-mukhi 108-bead mala from a named source with X-ray verification. Nepal grade if budget permits; Indonesian grade if not. Skip everything above five-mukhi for at least the first year.

If you have specific classical tradition alignment — Shaiva (five-mukhi), Ganesha-devotee (eight-mukhi with option of a single Ganesha rudraksha as a pendant), Shakta (nine-mukhi), Vaishnava (tulsi rather than rudraksha — see Chapter 5).

If you are collecting — proceed slowly, buy from named sources with documentation, always X-ray verify above eleven-mukhi. The counterfeit market is aggressive. A collector who reaches fourteen-mukhi without verification has almost certainly been sold at least one fake.

“The mukhi count is not a hierarchy of value. It is a taxonomy of tradition. Five-mukhi is not lesser. Twenty-one-mukhi is not better. Each has its role; most practitioners need five and no other.”
